You also need to decide if you're going to plant them in the ground or in pots. And if you do choose pots, make sure there's definitely some drainage very important. And what you want to remember too there are herbs that actually come back every year. Those are called perennials. TIP: P-E-R-E-N-N-I-A-L-S...they take up space year round So just remember when you're putting them in the ground that they will take space up all year round. So we're going to do two by seed. So I picked out basil and rosemary. So let's start with the basil. What we're going to want to do is fill our container about three quarters of the way high. The thing about basil is it¿s an annual, which means it won't come back next year. So what I did was I made a hole about a quarter inch deep. We're going to cover it with more soil. You want to press down, get that air out of there. Basil could grow up to about two feet high. It also takes about 10-20 days for the seeds to germinate. TIP: Basil: 10-20 days to germinate So you got to be patient. So every few days give that pot some water. One more thing, what you want to do is make sure you always keep a label of what it is that you are growing in each pot so you don't forget. So let's do rosemary. It's pretty much the same technique. Fill it up about three quarters of the way high, a hole about a quarter of an inch deep. Now rosemary is a perennial. That means it's going to come back every year. But I got about 6 to 8 seeds there. I'm going to put some more soil in there. Again get the air out. You want to label it. Another great way to label, because sometimes if these get too much water on them they get soggy and you can't read what they are, take like a Popsicle stick. You can write on them with marker. TIP: Label herbs with Popsicle sticks. A great job for the kids! That's a nice fun job for the kids. Again, water, water, water. This also takes about 10-20 days to germinate. TIP: Rosemary: 10-20 days to germinate So there's our rosemary and basil by seed. Now I just want to show you another way of planting. These I bought at the garden center. They've already started coming into bloom. You can quickly just put these in a larger pot so they flourish. So I've picked out Greek oregano right now. I'm just going to cut this plastic off. Again we'll fill our pot about three quarters of the way. For this you obviously need to make a little larger whole just so you can fit the whole root of the plant in there. This already comes with its own tag, which is great so we don't forget what it is. Right there, don't be afraid. Nice and gently just get it in there. We want to fill it again with some more soil. This is an organic soil too, which is great. TIP: Organic Soil filled with nutrients and vitamins. So you want to press that down and you just do a little more soil. And there's our oregano.
