Vending Machines with Healthy Fast Food? They Do Exist!

This is the contents of most typical vending machines.

It’s no secret obesity is a growing epidemic in this country. And while most of us know the importance of exercise and a healthy diet, there are many people that simply don’t have regular access to nutritious foods. In fact, it’s estimated that 23.5 million Americans—including 6.5 million children—live in “food deserts,” areas of the country that lack access to convenient and affordable nutritious foods.

HUMAN Healthy Vending is trying to do its part to remedy this problem with its line of vending machines, including the launch of the world’s first hot vending machine (called the “Hot HUMAN”). The company’s machines (HUMAN stands for “Helping Unite Mankind and Nutrition) have been popping up in schools and businesses across the country, offering everything from cold drinks (Zico, Coconut Water), healthy snacks (Pop Chips and Pirate’s Booty), and—in the Hot HUMAN—entrees made by such companies as Amy’s Kitchen and Kashi. The machines actually heat the entrees before dispensing them to the customer (admit it, that’s pretty cool!) to offer healthy fast food options.

And while healthy eating and vending machines normally don’t go hand in hand, this California-based company is working hard to change people’s perception. “We work with our locations to ensure we carry products that fit their needs,” says Sean Kelly, co-founder and CEO of HUMAN Healthy Vending. “We’ve created vending machine planograms with 100 percent nut-free options, as well as gluten-free, kosher and vegan items.”

Kelly also notes that HUMAN works with schools and public locations to ensure that the vending programs abide by legislative guidelines, such as the standards delineated for schools by the Alliance for a Healthier Generation. “We strive to provide the best options as much as possible, such as products that are organic, without trans fat, with as few ingredients as possible, no artificial colorings or preservatives, etc.”

Even the design of each machine aims to promote healthier eating. The LCD screens educate consumers on the products in the machine, as well as give general nutrition advice, such as how to read a nutrition label.
